The limit of human hearing
A healthy, young human ear is capable of hearing sound frequencies ranging from 20 Hz (very bass sounds) until the 20,000 Hz or 20 kHz (extremely high-pitched sounds). With our online tool you can generate any tone within this range to test your ears.
What is the Mosquito Test?
The "Mosquito Test" or Mosquito Tone is a high-pitched sound (generally above 15,000 Hz) used to test hearing age. As we age, the hair cells in the inner ear wear out, first losing the ability to hear high frequencies. If you are over 25 years old, it is very likely that you will not hear tones above 15 kHz.
Why don't I hear some buttons?
If you press the buttons and can't hear anything, it is not an error on the page. Sound is generated mathematically in real time, but there are two physical barriers:
- Your Speakers (20 Hz): Sub-bass frequencies require the speaker to be large and move a lot of air. 90% of cell phone and laptop speakers physically cannot vibrate that deeply. You need a Subwoofer.
- Your Ears (15 kHz): The natural wear and tear of the human ear (presbycusis) causes us to lose the ability to hear very high tones with age. While a child hears 15 kHz perfectly, most adults over 30 will not be able to perceive it.
Caution with Bass (Subwoofers)
Be careful when playing very low frequencies (less than 40 Hz) at high volumes if you do not have good sound equipment. Laptop and mobile computer speakers are not physically designed to move that much air and could become damaged or make mechanical clicking noises.
