If you think you know what the problem is, you can go directly to the corresponding solution. Solutions 1-3 are basic checks and settings that everyone should be sure to do. If you plan to use new wired headphones or if you think you may have hardware problems, Solution 4 will guide you through the basic settings you need to avoid common compatibility problems. If you are using a Bluetooth recording device, all of the solutions may help, but pay special attention to Solution 5. Solutions 6-9 will help you fix your Bluetooth recording devices. audio and give you other general tips that may be helpful to help your microphone do its job.
Solution 1:Set microphone access permissions.
Solution 2:Set the default recording device.
Solution 3:Disable Exclusive Application Control.
Solution 4: Make sure your hardware supports the microphone.
Solution 5:Connect your Bluetooth headphones manually.
Solution 6: Install the appropriate audio driver for your computer
Solution 7:Uninstall the microphone if it is in the devices and printers section.
Solution 8:Uninstall suspicious VOIP applications.
Solution 9: Perform a Windows Update.
Solution 1: Set microphone access permissions.
As a Windows 10 user, when you have a microphone problem, the first thing to check is the Microphone Privacy Settings page:
Open Windows Settings from the Start Menu.
Click the privacy icon.
Now from the left panel, select the “microphone” option and check these three settings.
- If it says “Microphone access for this device is turned off”, click the toggle button and turn on “Microsoft access for this device” .
- If “Allow apps to access microphone” option is disabled, please enable it.
- Check the list of applications and make sure to activate the ones you are trying to use.
Solution 2: Set the default recording device.
Press Windows key + R to open the Run panel.
Type Control panel and press the enter key or click OK
Click Hardware and Sound
Now click on Sound.
Now you can see the list of your recording devices in the “Record” tab, right click on an empty area of the list and check that both are displayed: Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices.
Right click on each of your recording devices, and make sure they are enabled. (if a device is already activated, you will see the option to deactivate in the menu)
Speak into your microphone. Make sure you are away from other microphones to avoid confusion in the next step.
As you speak into your microphone, watch for bars going up and down on the screen. If you see them next to a device, that's the one you're looking for. Select it and click the Set Default button. Note that this button will be gray if there is only one device listed or if the device is already set as default.
Solution 3: Disable Exclusive Application Control.
In the previous step, if you were able to identify your microphone by noticing the green bars when speaking to it, apply the following steps to that recording device. If you still don't recognize the microphone in question, apply the steps to all recording devices in the list:
Select the microphone from your recording devices list, and then click Properties.
In the advanced options tab, disable both options: “Allow apps to take exclusive control of this device” and “Prioritize apps in exclusive mode”.
Solution 4: Make sure your hardware supports the microphone.
There are 4 main types of microphone:
- Headphones with 2 separate 3.5mm connectors: one for the microphone and one for audio.
- Headphones or headphones with a single connector: 2 in 1 (Microphone and audio in the same 3.5mm connector).
- USB headphones/headphones with microphone.
- Bluetooth Headphones/Headphones with microphone.
If your headphones/headphones have two separate 3.5mm jacks, then your computer/laptop should also have two separate 3.5mm ports (Usually one green and one red): One for audio and one for microphone respectively. A single 3.5mm input won't be enough. If you only have one jack on your computer you'll need to get a single-jack headset, or an adapter that switches from a 3.5mm jack to a single 3.5mm jack.
If your headphones only have a 3.5mm jack for both audio and microphone, your laptop or desktop computer should have a single 3.5mm headphone port to capture both audio and microphone. An example for these headphones are the ones that came with old iPhones.
Other types of converters include:
- Single 3.5mm to dual 3.5mm converter (This is for single jack headphones to be connected to computers with dual ports).
- 3.5mm to USB converter.
- Double 3.5mm to USB converter.
Solution 5: Connect your Bluetooth headphones manually.
Normally when your computer's Bluetooth and your headphones' Bluetooth are turned on, they connect to each other automatically. Sometimes this doesn't happen. Sometimes they are connected but still no audio is being received or sent to the device. If your headphones are connected but not receiving audio, you have three options:
You can click the speaker icon, then the small arrow to switch to the computer speakers, and then switch back to the Bluetooth headphones. Be sure to select the (Hands-free or Headset) option and not the (stereo) option so that the microphone works properly.
You can go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound where you will find a list of the headphones under the recording devices tab. Right click on the device and select disconnect then right click again and select connect. This should reset the connection and fix possible bad connections.
You can always turn off Bluetooth and turn it back on to see if that fixes the problem.
If the Bluetooth headset is not yet connected, you can try uninstalling the device, putting the device in pairing mode, and pairing it with the computer again. To uninstall the device temporarily, go to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices, then select the headset and choose remove device.
Also be sure to activate the option at the bottom of the same page to download the necessary Bluetooth drivers even when you have metered connections. Don't worry, it's usually a small download.
Solution 6: Install the appropriate audio driver for your computer
Normally, your laptop or motherboard manufacturer should have the appropriate audio driver for your hardware on their official website. We recommend that you start your search there, download and install the appropriate official driver (compatible with your hardware and operating system), and then restart your computer. That should fix the problem. If for some reason it is difficult to get the official driver, and the one you have installed is not working properly, follow the steps below to set the default driver:
Disconnect any other devices first, so that only your microphone or headphones are connected.
Right click on your home button or press Windows key + X and select Device Manager.
Expand Sound, video, and game controllers, right-click on your high-definition audio device, and select update driver.
Select the second option: Search my computer for driver software
Click this option at the bottom: Choose from a list of drivers available on my computer.
Select High Definition Audio Device and click next.
A warning will appear on the screen confirming that you will make a change to the driver, click Yes.
Now restart your computer and check the microphone operation.
Solution 7: Uninstall the microphone if it is in the devices and printers section.
Some microphones and headphones - both Bluetooth and USB - appear in the Devices and Printers list in your control panel. If that's the case, you can always remove the device, disconnect it, and then connect it - which could reinstall it and in some cases, fix the problem.
Press Windows key + R to open the Run tab.
Type Control Panel and press Enter.
Click View devices and printers to view your list of devices.
Right click on the headphones, microphone or the USB receiver connected to your microphone and click Remove Device.
Click Yes to uninstall the device.
Now you can unplug your device and plug it back in to see if it works.
Solution 8: Uninstall suspicious VOIP applications.
VOIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol, which means voice or video chat. Sometimes, if you avoid exclusive control of applications (See solution 3), some VOIP programs such as Skype, Zoom, Viber, TeamSpeak, etc. They can modify your microphone settings to your needs and prevent it from working properly. That is why we recommend that you check the applications that have access to the microphone and uninstall those that may be causing the problem, including the pre-installed Skype if you do not use it.
Solution 9: Perform a Windows Update.
Windows 10 is known for constantly updating itself; Normally it would be ideal to have the latest update installed for security and to fix compatibility problems with your microphone.
Open Windows Settings from the Start menu.
Click the Updates & Security icon.
Click the Check for Updates button. If there is an update, be sure to download and install it.
After the update is complete, check your microphone again.
